Japanese Leporello Illustration Book Filled with Toba-E 鳥羽絵 Shunga 春画 Paintings

About the Item

Leporello illustration book filled with polychrome erotic Toba-e (caricatures style) shunga paintings. Shunga (literally “spring pictures”), is an erotic artistic tradition that emerged from early modern Japan, featuring graphic images of sexual activity. In total 15 paintings, 7 on one side, 8 on the other. Every depiction of the couples is distinctive, with some being exceptionally creative and even very humorous. The covers with blue silk with a brown scrolling foliage design. Entire length approx. 120.03 inch./304.9 cm. Toba-e is a style of Japanese painting that originated in the 12th century and is attributed to Toba Sôjô. The paintings were often humorous caricatures featuring animals performing human tasks. Although their popularity declined, Toba-e images had a lasting impact, especially in manga. Toba-e style paintings in the Edo period were known for their focus on comedy, simplicity, and precision of brushwork with crisp edges and organic shapes. The colours used were light and conservative.

    A captivating large six-panel byôbu (folding screen) with a refined Nanga School-style painting of a peaceful mountain landscape along a river. A large Chinese pavilion sits at the base of a tall towering cliff, next to a large curving pine tree (matsu). A junk with fishing nets is docked near the complex. This pavilion is looking over a small village in the distance, where several thatched roofs an figures are visible. Across the wide river, even the rooftops of the next village can be seen. This painting is made using black ink (sumi) on an goldish oxidized silver leaf background. Silver leaf continuously undergoes the process of oxidation, which creates a beautiful aged patina. The screen is signed in the lower left corner by an artist named Kômokuken. Mounted by two silk borders, a thin blue and white one, and a broad brown one with a crane motif.
